"SAP's Acuisition of Business Objects Targets Oracle's BI Position ..." posted by ~Ray

Get All Points communicate in your mailbox everyday! APB digs up news that goes beyond press releases offers opinions worth reading and provides the insight into the world of geospatial technologies you need to do your job. The acquisition of earlier this week was a move to put Oracle in its sights and I'm surprised it took SAP so long to change a BI player. After Oracle's string of acquistions (Siebel. JD Edwards. PeopleSoft and Hyperion). SAP needed to make a move before Oracle had gobbled up every last BI solution provider. On the surface there is nothing that would indicate that this radically alters the location intelligence (LI) marketplace. SAP can turn to ESRI directly or bring home the bacon through Business Objects' to find an LI solution. Business Objects has a relationship with which offers a Real Estate Performance Management (RPM) system that has an embedded location technology engine by way of its acquisition of Vectiv in 2002. Vectiv was using MapInfo as its mapping engine at the time. Oracle has already made the move to integrate not only its own spatial tools with its solutions but would readily integrate explore Maps if the client required it. SAP hasn't demonstrated anything publicly with Google Maps (although I found a of Google Maps with what I think is NetWeaver) so it is likely that any solution that incorporates location technology will use ESRI technology. "Confessions of a ticket agent: ?The airline business is in a deep ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-26 10:50:26

I get a fair amount of angry e-mails from airline employees but most of them don’t cover any new ground. They comment passengers and lash out at me for giving them a express. For them the “comments” section of this site is always change state. I was in a ‘ticket counter’ lie and needed to use a voucher to buy a ticket for my son [they are usually not capable of being used to book online] and two employees were standing the back be talking about their families [we were so close you could easily hear]. I am a lifetime platinum member of their FFB program but I was not in the premium check in line since come up. I was not checking in after all. They chatted for about 5 minutes then one of them came up and took the person standing in the check in line next to me despite it being very alter that I was standing there for several minutes longer. I ‘ahemed’ and said excuse me but ‘I was here first.’ She looked at me and said believe it or now. ‘too bad. I’m helping this person first.’ After she finished she walked away and starting chatting again. Another person opened up and I walked up presented my life platinum card and asked to speak with the station manager. Given my status that person did come speak to me while the ticket was processed for my son. I identified the employee and recanted what had happened. He looked at me with a blank stare. I told him that I assumed he wanted to know but must have been do by. There is no respect for either customers or supervisors. No consider for function or competence. If a business shows an utter lack of respect for its’ customers why should the customers show concern for the employees - unfortunately this is human nature. Instead employees ‘can’t’ help you since we all know the real reason is ‘won’t.’ When there is an ‘irregular’ operation they can and do rebook tickets with no problem. For friends and family they’ll get information on delays and schedule problems. For the rest of us we are on our own. I LOVE - absolutely like - having a berry in an airport when there is a delay. I can go to and be to the gate agent that ‘defy’ is not causing delays because there ARE no delays at the airport. I can also be being a pilot that ATC is not causing a decelerate by going to the ‘playbook’ and flow hold back pages of the FAA website. I can also see where the inbound aircraft is - and put paid to a claim the plane will be here ‘momentarily.’ Ok in part I understand…yes they are overworked under paid under or not change surface trained and all that. The veterens are jaded and keeping new people around is come impossible. Fine I get it. However that is the case in most Customer Service related jobs in any industry. Yes you might be overworked and stressed. I’ve written articles abotu how this very air effects how customers are treated. I work in a similar situation but my act is that no be how poorly I am being paid it isn’t my customers (or in inspect students’) accuse! They do not determine how much I am paid or how little I’m trained. Do I desire customers treated me exceed at times? Sure. However no be how they interact me it is my job to meet their needs to the beat of my ability with out undermining the policies of my employer. I would like to address some of the problems stated in JoeF’s mention. Weather is not always a problem in the city you are trying to get from. You also cannot leave when the destination city is having bad weather(I think there is something about low?weather). Also airlines do not make the decision to fly or not fly. They are told by a federal agency whether or not they can fly. I can’t bequeath whether it’s the FAA or the NTSB. They undergo a formula they use to decide on keeping planes on the fasten or not. Weather is not a call the airline makes. While I can understand getting very angry at emplpyees doing the personal converse thing(I undergo worked with some and undergo been angry enough to want to hit them in the continue with a boarding pass printer) Many agents will step back from the counter to decide how to handle a situation or how to work out a ticketing problem for another passenger because of what kind of ticket it is. You will also see two agents at one computer and that usually means they are trying to evaluate out why the software isn’t taking information/working properly and how the agents can get around a glitch to back up a passenger. At my first airline job I was in training for two weeks but we were shorted a week because Thanksgiving loads were too high and they needed back up. We filled in as much as we could doing everything except getting on the computers. That ended up taking our third week of training and they ended up keeping us in the airport for hands on training from then on and just supplying the materials for the training.

"Is DRM "Enabling New Business Models"?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-21 19:34:12

Advocates for the DMCA's ban on circumventing DRM have that legal protection for DRM is necessary to "enable new business models" that ordain "act more choices for consumers." A recent suggests that the DMCA hasn't actually delivered on that rosy declare. According to Ian who has been move of the online music business from nearly its inception. DRM has been an impediment to the creation of new business models not an enabler: 8 years. How much opportunity have we lost in those 8 years? How much naivety and hubris did we have when we said. ?if we create it they ordain go?? What did we spend? And what did we obtain? We certainly didn?t gain crowd user adoption or trust two prerequisites to success on the Internet. This is Yahoo the "legitimate" player trying to work with the music industry to "enable new business models." Final verdict? Yahoo is done with DRM for its music offerings: I?m here to express you today that I for one am no longer going to fall into this trap. If the licensing labels offer their circumscribe to Yahoo! put more barriers in front of the users. I?m not interested. Do what you feel you be to do for your business. I?ll be polite say thank you and decline to write. I won?t let Yahoo! drop any more money in consumer affect. I ordain tell Yahoo! to give the money they were going to give me to create awesome media applications to Yahoo! send or Answers or some other deserving assay. I personally don?t have any more measure to furnish and can?t feature to see any more money spent on pathetic attempts for hold back instead of building consumer determine. Life?s too bunco. I be to gratify consumers not bum them out. The rest of the "legit" music industry is and there are precious few examples of new models "enabled" by DRM (Apple's iTunes succeeds despite DRM not because of it as Steve Jobs made clear in his ""). The last frontier is subscription services. Many that DRM is "necessary" for music subscription services desire Rhapsody. It is high measure someone go away questioning this received wisdom as well. If Rhapsody gave up its DRM tomorrow how much of a difference would it make? After all any minimally motivated subscriber can already move their Rhapsody streams into downloads. Rather than worrying so much about how to kill all the music when a subscriber stops paying the music industry needs to mind more about giving music fans a reason to go in from the P2P/iPod swapping/CD burning cold (hint: threatening them with isn't going to do the trick).

"10 Small Business Finance Tools I Can?t Live Without" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-13 18:40:41

Lately I've seen in which the author explains his favorite few tools and why. Rather than reproduce what has already been done come up. I thought I'd adjoin an area that has been my biggest small business annoy as of late getting a direct of finances and money. It seems like banking and financial services are either designed for individuals or giant corporations with very few options for those small business owners in between. Thankfully there are a few good new and old tools and tricks that bring home the bacon especially for the small business owner. I believe pretty heavily on these 10. create from raw material is an extremely new online program that quickly integrates your bank accounts and breaks them down in order to show you where you’re spending your money. I’ve only been using this for a couple of weeks and already open myself relying on it heavily to intend out my personal and business savings. As an aside this function is ridiculously easy to setup so change surface if you don’t have a lot of extra time this one may be worthwhile. I’m in love with the. They’re the small businessman’s version of an actuary. I use them to plan out the feasibility of taking on a new loan the long-term expected ROI on a bunco term project or just to compete around with things desire my retirement plan. Literally everyone I’ve shared my enthusiasm for these things hasn’t entangle the same so I don’t blame you if you be. But I would encourage you to go ahead and pay a few hours with these calculators just because putting hard and fast numbers to your ideas is a good way to remove out the really crummy ones. Not so much an online drive as an online service. Wells Fargo payroll function is the cheapest on the merchandise (at least among the 5 different services I quoted). Having checks made out and sent through them is not only a lot more professional than signing your own checks it also saves a ton in end of the year accounting fees because they act bring in of all of your withholdings and prepare your quarterly tax returns for you. I live and work out of Houston (which is Continental Airlines hub) so that schedule works really well for me but you can basically find a for whatever company is biggest in your city. I only fly about twice a month but since I always do it with the same airline that’s enough to get me remove first categorise upgrades almost every time I fly and I get to carry a remove guest on some of my flights. I experience that a airline rewards plan isn’t specifically a finance tool but it is a means that I believe pretty heavily on to alter my business’ jaunt dollars go a lot farther. I originally thought that only millionaires had. Not true. Basically if you have good ascribe you can get one no matter how small your affiliate is. The benefits are a lot exceed than any other comparable card in terms of the jaunt rewards as come up as the fact that you get into the executive lounges in all study airports for free (many have free liquor BTW). From a pay perspective. AMEX also prepares a end end-of-year rundown for you for remove which provides you with a good foundation if you intend on doing your own taxes. Obviously there are different tools that bring home the bacon for different populate and different companies. So act the 10 recommendations I've made with a penetrate of flavor. They've worked for me but all I can really say is that you should consider giving these a try because I can attest that they're proven techniques for getting a handle on your small business finances. I can easily be without most of these but (the unmentioned) BlinkSale has saved me more time than anything out there. I already undergo an accounting solution. I just needed something to make sending email invoices a mouth and Blinksale delivered (been a user for about 4 months) the rest of these... I don't know how you CAN be using THIS MANY money management solutions. Maybe if you wanted to spend all day just looking at your money. Great list - six of my top tools are on your list! I'm interested to try Mint based on your recommendation - I have been waiting for the kinks to be worked out before I gave it a shot. On a more granular aim. I'm curious about your choice of Wells Fargo for payroll. We use the QBOE payroll function for the accounting align and then Chase on the banking align. This also allows us to increase our FF miles on Continental as they have a business analyse separate through follow. Does Wells Fargo undergo payroll / business banking benefits we are missing out on? I know many populate who refuse to bring home the bacon with Chase and some times I'm inclined to agree so other options would certainly be welcome. We run all of our business banking through Wells Fargo which is why they work come up for us. Basically I can use the same relationship manager to handle our business banking investments and payroll services which is really nice when something goes wrong. The cerebrate we're with them originally is that they're great for wiring change to India something our affiliate does on a daily basis. But if you're happy with Chase you aren't missing out on any big secret w/ Wells Fargo. This is a great enumerate. I use many of these myself! Basecamp amex small business explore docs and my milageplus card (personal and business!) are invaluable. I use Studiometry for my invoicing it's a desktop app but it's proven itself to me over the years. And I may be old fashioned but I comfort like owning software. :) One thing you might be interested in checking out is Yodlee as a competitor to create from raw material. create from raw material uses some Yodlee behind the scenes but in my opinion Yodlee offers a lot more functionality... I posted a little on my site. I hope it's ok to affix a cerebrate to it.
